nambience Bioluminescent ambient lighting
have you ever had a living lamp?

Our mission...

...is to create the first truly sustainable lightsource. Using the power of bioluminescence and synthetic biology, we are developing a "life bulb" that can be used as a sustainable and beautiful alternative to indoor ambient electric lighting.

Why?

Most commonly, ambient lighting is provided by LEDs. LEDs on their own do not consume much power. However, the cost to produce them is high, both in terms of energy and resources. LEDs are made from rare earth metals, which are mined in environmentally destructive ways. The production process is also energy intensive, and recycling them is difficult and costly.

There are currently no sustainable ways to produce light.

Mining leads to heavy metal contamination.
12,000+ tons of LED waste in Canada since 2021.
37B tons of CO2 emitted producing LEDs worldwide.

What if nature had a solution?

Fungal bioluminescence is that solution. Combined with the self-sustaining photosynthetic properties of microalgae, nambient lighting will be a must in tomorrow's world. We want to offset the negative impact of electric lighting production by providing a beautiful and sustainable alternative.

Questions?

Q. Where is nambience in its development?

A. We are currently in the proof-of-concept phase. We aim to complete our first prototype by the end of 2025. Since we are working with living engineered organisms, we need to ensure that our product is reliable and biosecure. We look forward to sharing our progress with you on our social media, so please keep in touch!
