Nambi was born out of a passion for innovation and a commitment to sustainability. Our story began in 2022 when a group of UBC students, led by the Nambi team, established the first-ever iGEM team at UBC Okanagan.
Our inaugural project, Life Bulb, aimed to engineer cyanobacteria to produce bioluminescence. This ambitious endeavor and work in the iGEM competition won us a Gold Medal at the iGEM Grand Jamboree 2022 in Paris and subsequently captured significant media recognition.
Inspired by this success and driven by a desire to make a lasting impact, our team decided to transform Life Bulb into a biotech startup, called Nambi. The name pays homage to the Neonothopanus nambi fungus, one of the most influential organisms recently discovered in the field of auto-bioluminescence.
We relocated to Calgary to embark on a mission to create a world where biotechnology is not only a powerful tool for innovation but also a source of inspiration and beauty. Nambi is dedicated to developing sustainable solutions that harness the power of biology to address global challenges and improve people's lives.
